Collectable Model Airplanes of the F-111 Aardvark,
Fighter Jets,
Models, Books, Videos and Aviation Art all of the F-111 Aardvark.
The F-111 is the first swing wing jet fighter made
in production. There were a lot of problems with the swing wing design
but it allowed the aircraft to operate over a wide range of airspeeds .
The Aardvark was a large plane for the fighter designation but it was really
used for a high speed bomber. This plane is still in use today in
small numbers. Later swing wing fighter jet aircraft such as the F-14 Tomcat
have gained greater fame and respect and this plane is still called the
Fleet Defender in the US Navy. These fighter jets model
airplanes come in plastic model kits, wood kits, die cast models and mahogany
model airplanes. The Specs on this page cover only
one model of this aircraft. There are many different models with
different specs.

F-111 Aardvark Pilot's Flight Operating Manual
Product Description
The F-111 Aardvark flew 4000 combat missions during the Vietnam War, struck
Libya in 1986, and saw action during Operation Desert Storm. Originally designed
as a medium-range fighter-bomber, the versatile aircraft proved its meddle as a
strategic bomber, tactical strike aircraft, and reconnaissance platform. When it
debuted in 1964, the F-111 ushered in a new era. Equipped with variable-geometry
wings, afterburning turbofan engines, and terrain-following radar, the high-tech
F-111 was truly groundbreaking. Originally printed by General Dynamics and the
United States Air Force in the 1960s, this F-111 Flight Operating Manual taught
pilots everything they needed to know before entering the cockpit. Classified
"Restricted," the manual was recently declassified and is here reprinted in book
form. This affordable facsimile has been reformatted and color images appear in
black and white. Care has been taken however to preserve the integrity of the
text.

Force Drawdown
Hardbound Book The end of the Cold War created a golden
opportunity for reducing the defense burden and providing taxpayers with a
"Peace Dividend." For the United States Air Force, this resulted in drastic
reductions: 23% in aircraft inventory, 30% in personnel, and 32% in the
number of bases and other major installations. Well-known and long-serving
aircraft, such as the A-7D/K, the B-52G, the F-4C/D/E, the F-111A/D, the
FB-111A and the SR-71, have been withdrawn from active and reserve
components, and some states, such as California, have lost nearly half of
their Air Force bases. Illustrated with over 410 color photographs, this new
book provides a rich pictorial record of aircraft (including old and new
markings) and units which no longer exist, and offers a visual chronicle of
organizational changes between 1988-1995. 144 pages, 8½" x 11", hardcover.

David, I was hired by
General Dynamics for one purpose. I had just
got out of the Air Force, had been Thru several
aircraft schools as top student. My next door
neighbor worked at
General Dynamics. The day after I was
discharged General Dynamics. called me to come out and have
breakfast with them. I told them over the phone that
I had no desire to go to work for them but I did go
out for breakfast with them. By noon I was working
for them. I found out later My next door neighbor
was over research and development of the F-111
program.
Ship number 14 was the First Article Inspection
Aircraft. It had to be accepted by the Air Force for
General Dynamics. to get the contract for production.
The Air Force had turned back all F-111s
prior to 14. I inspected all parts and sub
assemblies of 14. That was my job... The Air force
accepted ship 14 with very few squawks. I was then
transferred to Vendor
Quality Control.. After a brief training I
was given about 20 contractors to inspect their
quality production.
One of the suppliers was Anadite
Corp. They put the plating and paint on the wing
pivot box. They wanted to put the trailer for it in
an outside area for me to inspect their work. I
would arrive there early of a morning. The sun would
be shinning on the box. I started noticing shiny
spots on the surface. After a close look I detected
these areas had been ground and polished. That to me
meant weld repairs. The records with the box did not
indicate any weld repairs. I would then call into
the plant, tell my boss, Jim Townley what I had
found. He would tell me that he would go to
receiving inspection to look at the records there
and for me to call back in an hour or so. When I
would call back he would tell be that a weld repair
was in the records authorizing the repair. I would
sign off on the plating and paint. Later he was
found accepting money from the company (Selb Mfg)
for allowing this to happen. All of the inspectors
except me had to go to Walnut Ridge AR. to fill in
as in house inspection. The other guys were pissed
because I was never sent there.
Townley knew that I would find out what was going on
and stop it.. I am sorry but the serial numbers have
been lost years ago along with my notes. General
Dynamics. did
not like the idea that I was dating a lady that
worked for a contractor so I resigned....Leland Cook

The final inspection of the crew module handle after assembly was
an x-ray. Their x-ray tech was suppose to wear glasses to correct
vision to 20/20. I pulled his eye test. I never saw him use glasses.
I pulled 6 x-ray sheets at random, 3 of them showed loose hardware
inside of them, washers etc. I told this to the in house McDonald
Quality Rep. Also suggested to him that McDonald issue a Flight
Safety Technical Order to re-x-ray all handles installed on
aircraft. The next day I was "locked out " of the company. Weldon
Peacock, our Quality Rep at Mc Donald confirmed all of my findings.
I don't know if any thing was later done at McDonald in regards to a
Tech. Order recall.
