X Planes Experimental Airplanes
X Planes or Experimental
Aircraft, Black projects.
These planes usually start out as Black Projects, experimental airplane
designs that are above top secret. These planes are so secret that
even most of the top military officials and possibly even the president
don't know about them. Money for these projects is secretly siphoned
from other projects to keep spy's from finding out the true experimental
budget. Other aircraft in the X Plane projects like the X-1, X-2
and X-15 are highly publicized. These planes are usually funded by
NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration). This page contains
as many models that I could find showing the progression of the technology
through the years giving you a great study guide by just looking at these
models and reading their descriptions.

Webmasters Note: There
were only two of these aircraft ever made. One is now in the Wright
Patterson Airforce Base, the other crashed while on a photo shoot.
When an F-104 Starfighter came close to the XB-70, it apparently got caught
in a wingtip vortex, Look magazine said it did a cartwheel, then tore the
tail off of the XB-70. The XB-70 lost control and crashed killing
all of the crew. The article appeared in the Look Magazine sometime
in the 1960's. This plane was called the Billion Dollar Baby and
so was the title of the article.
Jeff, Stew Stewart here and just
wanted to say that photo . and the info on the XB70 was of intrest to me as
in 1950 I was stationed in El Centro Calif. I in the Navy and Alvin White
was at that time Capt. in the Air force in a combined Testing program.
He later be came the test pilot for the XB70 and he did survive the crash
and I had the pleasure of flying with him many times!! He now resides in
Denver at my last contact. Thanks,
Stew Stewart
Letter from a viewer: You
have a very interesting website, but I believe you are mistaken in yournote
on the XB-70. The surviving example is at Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton,
OH. I recently saw this aircraft in person and it iseven more awesomethan
I imagined! I researched the XB-70 at the Smithsonian, and although
I found very few references to it, it appears that there is a 6'
wind-test model there.
Thanks for your time.

One other thing should be cleared
up concerning the paragraph written
about the XB-70 . One crewmember
was able to engage his clamshell excape pod that comprised the seat that
he used in the pilots position. His fellow pilot had difficulty with his
pod and did not successfully excape. The surviving pilot sadly resigned
from the test program, but noted that the XB-70 was the best aircraft he
ever flew. So not all crew members perished as mentioned in your footnote.
