Saratoga received 7 battle stars for her WWII service

The USS Saratoga was the U.S. Navy's second aircraft carrier, being commissioned in November, 1927, one month before her class leader, USS Lexington (CV-2). And though she survived World War II, it was only to serve as a guinea pig anchored with other ships for post-war testing of the atomic bomb.

CV-3:  History of the Legendary Aircraft Carrier, 1927-1946. The story of the USS Saratoga, which survived the 1922 Washington Disarmament Treaty's cutting torch through her conversion to a new and seemingly benign type of vessel: the aircraft carrier. As you'll see, however, no carrier, or ship, played a greater role in developing the men and tactics that became the massive force that is now the United States Naval Aviation.

Curtiss F11C-2 Goshawk  art print by Ted Williams. The U.S. Navy ordered twenty-eight F11C-2 Goshawk fighter-bombers in October, 1932, all of which - save one - were flown by VF-1B, the "High Hat" squadron, stationed on the USS Saratoga (CV-3)

The year is 1928, and this Boeing F4B has a bird's eye view of the U.S. Navy's new, big carriers: the USS Saratoga (CV-3) and the USS Lexington (CV-2)

Originally designed as a battle cruiser, the USS Saratoga was converted, mid-construction, into one of the U.S. Navy's first aircraft carriers. This is an impressive carrier from its development to its service during World War II and its final resting place at the bottom of Bikini Atoll.

The USS Saratoga was the U.S. Navy's second aircraft carrier, being commissioned in November, 1927, one month before her class leader, USS Lexington (CV-2). And though she survived World War II only to serve as a guinea pig anchored with other ships for post-war testing of the atomic bomb, now you can bring her back to life again!

The Saratoga had a complement of biplanes including nine F3Fs, nine SBU-1 Corsairs, nine BFC-2s and six TG-2s
