I remember that I told you of my quest to try very hard to acquire 1/72 scale airplane models that are exact models of planes that took part in the WWII Naval Battles, and USAAF Air Battles that were, my estimation turning points in WWII in the Pacific. You had mentioned that sadly not all of the famous airplanes that took part in these battles and actions of my interest have been produced as model airplanes. And one in particular was there was no model of any of the P-38's from the 347th. Fighter Group, 339th. Fighter Squadron that shot down Japanese Adm. Yamamoto in 1943. Well, I looked all over on the internet and low and
behold I found a model of one of the P-38's that took part in the Yamamoto
raid!!! The P-38 was named, Miss Virginia and was assigned to Lt. Bob
Petit. However I guess that Lt. Petit did not draw the straw to go on the
Yamamoto raid and Lt. Rex Barber did. But, Lt. Barber's P-38 was
"unserviceable" for the Yamamoto flight so he "borrowed" Lt. Petit's "Miss
Virginia" for the assassination raid. So, "Miss Virginia" was on the raid,
flew by Lt. Barber, and I have found a 1/120 scale diecast (assembled) model
of the P-38J Lightning outfitted as it was on the raid. The model is
available at FlyingMule.com at
a cost of . The model is manufactured by Corgi Noseart Series, Code
CG-CS90364. Yes, it is NOT 1/72 scale as I would like but I'll gladly make
due with this 1/120 scale completely finished diecast model. For even
though it's smaller size, this P-38 model still has a wingspan of 5.25"
which is okay for me. In all my searching this was the ONLY model of a
P-38 that was used in the shooting down of Adm. Yamamoto - anywhere on the
internet I could find!!

I am looking for information on any article that you may know about, related to the P38 Lightning used for Photo Recon. in Europe? My home town is Redstone, Montana and during WWII we had a pilot from there that flew the P38 Lightning on these missions. An article was written by a major publication ( Life, Look ?? ) on this pilot, a Major George Owens. I was only 7 or 8 years old at the time, but I remember a day in school when this pilot was ferrying a P38 Lightning across country and he buzzed Redstone and our schoolhouse. My older brother reminded me of this happening and wanted to know if I could get a copy of this article somehow? Your website came up on my first search effort so I want to see if you could direct me as to where to look? Thank you in advance for your help in this area and for the information I have already found related to the fabulous P38 Lightning aircraft. Dwaine Overby |
