	I was really surprised to see the amount mosses in Alaska. These pictures were taken near Slide Mountain on Alaskan Highway 1.

Jeff Dyrek      As I walked through the Alaskan tundra to get a good picture of slide mountain reflecting in a nearby lake, I was actually walking through a field of reeds with the ground covered with this moss growing everywhere.  It was late September and just after the tourist season so hotels and car rentals were cheap.  The colors were absolutely beautiful.  My main reason for going was to get away from the allergy season back in Illinois which comes with the harvest season.  I'm a disabled vet and the coughing and sneezing of the allergy season starts me to have internal bleeding.  So it turned out that trip was just an act of desperation and for my health.    But getting back to this moss in Alaska.  What happens is that the ground below is melted only a few feet thick above the permafrost.  In this kind of tundra, larger trees cannot grow because they cannot root too deep so what is left are the smaller trees, bushes, and ground cover plants.  Since the ground below is permafrost, the water on top cannot go anywhere leaving swampy marshes everywhere, a perfect place for moss and reeds to grow, not to mention mosquitoes.    Looking at the picture of the moss, you can see that it is a red, with some green parts springing up.  As I walked, I broke one  of these moss bundles open and found it to be about a foot thick or more.   Go To the Alaska Exhibit Home Page Click Here's a good link to more information about mosses.
