Alaska Expedition 2006.

Ground cover plants on the forest floor near Mt. Slide Alaska

In the Tundra of Alaska, there were no tall trees.  The tundra was filled with only bushes, small trees and various types of ground plants with lots of mud holes.  This was all above the five thousand foot level.  At lower levels, even several hundred miles north were forest, not really tall, but they were a normal type of tree.   In one place I noticed that all of the trees were dead for as far as you can see.  The forest floor basically a swamp.  I've seen this same type of dead forest in East Texas and other places that I cannot remember.  What caused the trees to die.  I'm not really sure, but the forest floor was all a wet swamp and the trees were not swamp type of trees.  All of a sudden, I realized what killed the trees.  It was the road.  When the levy was built to raise the road above the murky soil, the forest went from a damp soil to a swamp and this is why I believe that the forest really died.

The fall colors of the trees in Alaska didn't have the reds as I described at the top of the page.  But when I looked at the mountains, there were large areas of red in the higher elevations.  In the lower mountains, there was only a bright golden yellow.  What was the red in the higher mountains.  You will see pictures of this later in this exhibit.  But the reds were mosses and mostly very low to the ground bushes that could pretty easily walked over or through.
