A look at the US Navy Aircraft Carriers, mainly the
USS Kitty Hawk CV-63 Aircraft Carriers.

The USS Kitty Hawk holds about 85 airplanes, more than 6000 military personnel, it carries as much as 1.2 million pounds of conventional weapons, it has trucks, fairly large boats for the captain and the admiral, it can travel more than 32 knots and is one of most feared military machines in the world.  All this -  and its mission is to keep the peace.  Planned De-commissioning in 2008 Class: Kitty Hawk Class, Built By the New York Ship Building Corp., Camden, N.J. Powered by Eight Foster-Wheeler boilers, four Westinghouse geared steam turbines, four shafts, 280,000 shaft  horsepower.   The Kitty Hawks length is 1062.5 feet (323.8 meters), its Flight Deck Width is 252 feet (76.8 meters) Width at sea level is 130 feet (39 meters).  The total displacement of the USS Kitty Hawk is about 60,100 tons Standard and 80,800 tons full loaded.  The USS Kitty Hawks speeds 30+ knots (34.5+ miles per hour advertised ), but I've seen 38 knots on our inertial navigation system.  The Hawks range 14,805 at 20 knots or 7,400 at 30 knots.  Ship's Company is 3,150  and the  Air Wing crew is about 2,480 on our cruise in 1977 we had more than 6000 Sailors and Marines aboard.  Armament: Sea Sparrow launchers, 3-20mm Phalanx CIWS mounts.  The USS Kitty Hawk is one of the greatest aircraft carriers that has ever sailed.  In these pages about Aircraft Carriers you will see many pictures, photos and stories from our readers.  This photo tour shows all parts of the Kitty Hawk so you can see it as the sailors see the ship.

The US Navy A-4 Skyhawk Jet Fighters, A-4 Skyhawk model airplanes, scale model planes, plastic model planes, wooden plane models and diecast model planes for your enjoyment and education.  This Jet Fighters online toy and hobby shop has a tremendous number of model planes of all kinds giving the hobby collector a fantastic selection of toys and model air planes to choose from.  After looking at the specs for the A4 Skyhawk jet fighter, I found that this fighter jet has a fantastic 720 degree per second roll rate.  This means that the A4 Skyhawk Jet Fighter can roll twice in one second. A letter from the USS Kitty Hawk
Commanding Officer 1972-1973

Dear Jeff
Thanks for a chance to see your excellent pictures.  May I make a  comment or two that may be useful?  VF-114 were the "Aardvarks."  The other F-14 squadron, VF-213, were the "Black Lions."  Both squadrons  flew Phantoms, F-4B's, during Vietnam.  These two fighter squadrons were part of CVW-11. One of the things that enabled the Hawk to earn the best overall combat record in the Vietnam War was that CVW-11 was always deployed on the  Hawk.  This was not true with the other Carriers.  CVW-14 was the air wing aboard Constellation CVA-64 except for one cruise, when CVW 14 deployed on Ranger, CV-61.  The complete marriage of the air wing and  the ship eliminated some of the difficulties that squadrons occasionally experienced on carriers when they did not have shops, spaces and living quarters that were always "theirs."  Glad that you took such great pictures during your cruise, and that you are so generous in showing them.
