A Photo of an Antonov
An-12 Cub Aircraft on the Arctic Ocean, Sredney Island, Russia.
North
Pole Expedition 2002.
Our
North Pole Expedition used this
Antonov An-12 Cub,Russian Aircraft for transport
from Katanga, Russia to Sredney island. This is a photo of the An-12 on Sredney.
We used this Antonov An-12, for
transport from Katanga to Sredney Island deep in the Arctic Circle.
Our trip was fantastic. This aircraft was much too heavy to land
on the All Ice runway at camp Borneo which was made on the arctic ice near
the north pole which was only six feet thick. This plane carried
a lot of cargo from Katanga to Sredney island then we took an Antonov An-26
to Borneo Base. The North Pole Ski Team left first to get to the pole
so they would have an extra day of skiing, the non ski group stayed in
the Sredney Hilton for twelve hours waiting for the Antonov An-26 to return.
One thing that I noticed was that the aircraft were used constantly and
the crews worked long hours on this expedition ferrying people and equipment
to and from the base camp, Camp Borneo. It didn't take long
to realize that the Russian crews had more experience in Arctic operations
than any one else. This is why I was glad to use Global
Expedition Adventures for our North Pole Adventures.
