  Jackie Cochran
Pilot in the Fastest Lane
Rich. This fascinating biography details the complicated life and amazing aviation achievements of Jacqueline "Jackie" Cochran, who became the first woman to break the sound barrier and to fly a bomber across the Atlantic; possessed more than 200 aviation records for speed, altitude and distance; was commander of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) during World War II; and reached Mach 2 in a Lockheed F-104G as a colonel in the Air Force Reserve. 288 pages, 6"x 9", softcover.

Created by famed Lockheed designer Kelly Johnson, the F-104 Starfighter was designed to compete with Soviet MiG-15s. Equipped with a huge and powerful J79 engine, the aircraft could reach speeds well in excess of Mach 2.0, while its thin, trapezoidal wing provided extremely low drag with terrific acceleration and rate of climb. This pilot's flight operating handbook was originally produced by the USAF. It has been slightly reformatted but is reproduced here in its entirety. 242 pages, 8" x 11", b&w photographs.
