The Douglass F3D / F-10 Skynight Jet Fighter Airplane Book store.This is a photo of the F3D-2 or more commonly know as the F-10 Skyknight. The Skyknight is 46' 6" long, 16' high with a wingspan of 50'. The Skynight weighs 18,160 lbs empty and has a max gross weight of 26,850 lbs. It has two Westinghouse J34-WE-36 Jet engines each producing 3,400 lbs of thrust. The Skyknight has a max range of 1,200 miles, a cruise speed of 350 mph a max speed of 600 mph and a maximum rate of climb of 4,500 ft/min. Operations with Douglas F-3D Skynights from carriers often found the night more of an adversary than the enemy. 0942612043Douglas F3d Skyknight (Naval Fighters Series No 4) by Steven J. Ginter The first protoype was trucked from El Segundo to Murdoc Dry Lake (Edwards AFB). Its design had been refined into a bulbous shape which gave rise to the nickname "Willy the Whale". While the Air Force held discussions on the A-3's and its possible use, the Naval Air Test Center, Paxtent River, MD and MCAS El Toro were conducting similated night interceptions in which the XF3D-1 repeatedly intercepted and destroyed single-seat jet fighters above 40,000 ft.
