U.S. Navy Hornet Units of Operation Iraqi Freedom
Combat Aircraft Vol. 46
Softbound Book

Part One.
Holmes. The F/A-18 Hornet served as the "universal soldier" in Iraq,
attacking Iraqi Republican Guard tanks, government buildings and more. But
the Hornets didn't just drop munitions; they also launched anti-radar
missiles and acted as aerial tankers and reconnaissance platforms. Here,
you'll explore the Hornet's versatility and well-earned reputation as one of
the world's leading strike-fighter aircraft. 96 pages, 52 color and 49 B&W
photographs, 21 color profiles, 7¼"x 9¾", softcover.

the Korean War - as they fly their F/A-18s from the decks of carriers stationed
off the coast of Turkey during Operation Iraqi Freedom. A very different

exclusively with clandestine Special Forces, which makes the firsthand accounts
included here a particularly rare treat. 96 pages, color and B&W photographs,

The
Pentagon Paradox :
The Development of the F-18 Hornet
James P. Stevenson
Hardcover
Published 1993
As a former military officer, I was curious about this book upon
hearing about it from a friend in the Naval aviation community. I have
seen factual evidence of this kind of procurement first hand. In
fairness, all branches do it. The Army bought off on a very substandard
Bradley (quasi-armored) for political reasons, for example. As I have no
way of researching Stenvenson's facts, I keep an open mind but gauge that
against my personal military experiences. After reading this book, I have
to admit allegiance to the lightweight fighter mafia. America cannot
afford 50-90 million dollar hyper complex fighters in limited numbers against
aggressive factions that possess superior numeric air forces. I believe
that the military should invest in a reality check as to where our dollars
are being thrown. The quote "Where is Naval Aviation going?" really
deserves in-depth consideration. Careers in the upper military ranks are
being bolstered by people maneuvering for political and monetary gain shamefully
at putting the lower ranks and our country at risk. Between the aerospace
industry, the lobbyists, and the obscene amount of money involved,
it shouldn't come as a shock that politics and corruption are rampant.
I enjoyed the book and have already made multiple recommendations
to other military officers and friends in the V-22 Osprey community.

F/A-18
Hornet :
How to Fly and Fight (At the Controls , No 2)
David C. Isby
Paperback
Published 1998
Book Description
Jane's At the Controls is a new series providing a 'hands-on'
briefing of what it is like to fly and fight in modern combat aircraft.
By following a hypothetical mission set sometime in the near future, the
full capabilities of the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 will be revealed. With
its APG-65 multimode radar and infra-red search and tracking sensor,
the Hornet can operate by day or by night over the harshest environment
of all: the ocean. It can carry a formidable ordinance load including
Harpoon anti-ship missiles and SLAM, it's equivalent for land targets.
In this scenario the Hornets will use laser guided bombs for pinpoint precision
against enemy missile craft lurking among neutral shipping.

Hornet
: The Inside Story of the F/A-18
Orr Kelly
This is a fine book. Although it is out of print, good used copies
are easily available. Orr Kelly presents an interesting chronicle of the
ideas, business deals, politics, and people behind the development
of the Navy's F/A-18 Hornet strike fighter. He starts by focusing briefly
on the Soviet Union's development of a supersonic bomber in the early
1970s, and the Navy's concern that it could be used against our carrier
battle groups. In chronicling the Navy's response to the perceived
threat, Kelly does an excellent job profiling Vice Admirals William Houser
and Kent Lee. They had a common goal of using a smaller variety of
aircraft to do more jobs with greater reliability, but different ideas
about achieving it. Lee wanted a new, dual-role fighter/attack aircraft,
and Congress allowed him to study the idea. Congress eventually
directed the Navy to develop the new plane from the winner of the Air Force's
competition between the YF-16 and the YF-17. Kelly reports why the Air
Force chose to develop the YF-16, and how the Navy was allowed to develop
the YF-17 instead. Kelly goes on to record the Hornet's very difficult
technical development, including the initially deficient roll rate, the
marginal fuel range, and worst of all, the cracks in the tail fin supports.
The description of how the problems were solved or minimized is an interesting
overview of the challenges inherent with engineering any new plane,
especially the F/A-18, born as it was from a demanding and probably foolish
Congressional directive.
The primary strength of the book is its balanced tone - Kelly presents
both the good and bad events in the Hornet's development, and the strengths
and weaknesses of the final design. This easily makes it one of the best
books written about the Hornet.
