History Notes
Dear Jeff,
I thoroughly enjoyed Stephan Wilkinson's article "Call Her Connie" in the July
09' issue of AVIATION HISTORY. In the sidebar on page 29 "10 Connie Oddities",
I noted in item "4", ..."The first-ever bombed airliner was a Canadian Pacific
DC-3 in 1949, when a Quebecois Albert Guay tried to collect life insurance on
his wife." I don't want to sound negative but, Rodney Stich in his book
"Unfriendly Skies" and multiple Internet sources recount that the FBI verified
nitroglycerin bombing on October 10, 1933 of a UAL Boeing 247D (NC 13304)
enroute from Cleveland to Chicago, is the first proven case of airliner sabotage
in aviation history. The 247D exploded and crashed at about 9:15pm near
Chesterton/McCool, Indiana. No survivors.
Sincerely,
John D. Bybee
