2005 North Pole Exhibit Home

The professional guides are truly professional skiers, but the other skiers are just ordinary people and not professional skiers. This picture shows the skiers crossing a pressure ridge on the North Pole arctic ice. A pressure ridge is formed when two huge masses of ice are pushed together with nowhere to go but up. I have seen pressure ridges that were up to twenty feet high and others have told me that some get up to thirty feet in height. It's a combination of wind and arctic ocean currents that move these huge sheets of ice together forming the pressure ridges. One professional skier, Alan Chambers, told me that the wind was the major cause of ice movement on the North Pole.
