Photo of Sorensen's B-24 Liberators on their way to General MacArthur's 7th and 90th Air GroupsBy June of 1943, convoys were passing safely through sea lanes where, a few weeks previously, they had undergone the severest punishment. On 30 June, Prime Minister Winston Churchill announced publicly that hardly a single Allied ship was sunk in the North Atlantic between 17 May and the end of June, employed by the British, American, and Canadian Air Forces contributed decisively to this Spectacular victory the specially equipped (Very Long Range) VLR B-24 Liberator Bombers. While all of this need for long range B-24's was going on in the European theater, General MacArthur and his forces were screaming for them in the South Pacific for their battles against Japan in the South Pacific. But, Charles Sorenson's increase in production at Willow Run would soon be making thousands of B-24s available for all areas of need. On April 28, 1943 ship number 300 of 8,685 stared into final assembly. The photo above shows Sorensen's B-24's on their way to General MacArthur's 7th and 90th Air Groups in the South Pacific, and to Burma and China. |
