Skiers cross a small open water lead, the lead sled goes first and the others follow.  This looks like a shallow creek but it is really 12,000 feet to the bottom.  When a lead opens up, the water flows to the top of the ice leaving most of the ice below the surface.  This gives you an idea about the expression, "The Tip of the Iceberg."  You can see here that there are only about three inches of ice sticking out of the water.  Below that is about six feet thick of ice.
