Aerial Photo of Ie Shima 1945 WW2This is an Aerial Photo of the island of Ie Shima in 1945 at the end of WW2. Notice Along the runways in this aerial photo that there are little white squares. These are where the airplanes were parked. they were built up with berms that were about as high as the airplanes. This prevented an enemy aircraft from strafing the airfield and hitting all of the airplanes. Also, if a bomb was dropped, the planes in the adjacent berm would not be damaged because the berm would absorb the shockwave and the shrapnel from the explosion. |
