Short Straw is a tremendous book written by Captain Bernard W. Peterson about aviation in the Korean WarThe Grumman F7F Tigercat was 45' 4" long, 15' 2" high and had a wingspan of 51' 6". The Tigercat used two Pratt & Whitney R-2800-22W or 34W Double Wasp 18 cylinder radial engines each rated at 2,100 hp, with an added 300 hp with water injection. The airplane weighed 13,100 lbs empty and a max weight of 25,720 lbs for the later models. The F7F Tigercat had a maximum speed of 435 mph and a maximum climb rate of 4,530 feet per minute. The maximum range was 1,170 miles for the -1 version, to 1,200 miles for the -3, to only 810 miles for the -4N version. The -4N version of the Tigercat had a radar replacing the machine guns in the nose and a rear observer replacing the internal rear fuel tank giving the plane a shorter range. |
