Flying Fortress
Tony Weddel. 0008515
Most B-17 Flying Fortress paintings show them in combat over Hitler's Europe, but
Flying Fortresses played a role in the Pacific, too. Here we see two B-17Es
of the 13th Air Force, 98th Squadron - "Galloping Gus" and "Typhoon McGoon
II" - hooking it home after a bombing mission against Japanese positions
in New Guinea. Nakajima Rufe floatplanes rise to engage them, but prove
to be no match for the Fortress gunners. 23"x 19" aviation art print. .....#0008515

Stan Stokes.
0073003
On December 6, 1941, Pilot Earl Cooper, navigator John "Davy" Crockett
and their crewmates flew their B-17C Flying Fortress to the Philippines
by way of Oahu, Hawaii. But arriving in Hawaii on the morning of December
7, the unarmed B-17 met Japanese Zeros. After evasive measures and the
loss of one engine, they flew over the destroyed Hickham Field then finally
belly-landed at Wheeler Field, flying on fumes. 16"x 11½"

This portrayal of the Me 163 Komet perfectly captures the function
of this tiny interceptor. Rocketing up through the formation of B-17s at
almost three times their speed, the Komet makes its strike and flashes
into the distance before the gunners have time to react. You can almost
see the surprise on the faces of the B-17 crews as the Me-163 speeds past!

A single Flying Fortress finds itself all alone in enemy skies,
damaged by flak during its bomb run. One engine has been shut down,
control surfaces are shredded and there are wounded airmen aboard.
Struggling to maintain altitude, the B-17 is attacked by two Me 109s bent
upon its destruction. Fighters from the 361st Fighter Group/375th Fighter
Squadron enter the fray, destroying one of the attackers and driving off
his wingman. The journey home will be uneventful, now that the injured
crew has its own private escort of the determined Little Friends. Signed
