Tidesurge (A98), photographs the USS Forrestal after the fire.

We were being refueled under very poor conditions by RFA Tidesurge (A98)
off the coast of South Africa. She was a British Oilier.

They were the only vessel that got close to us to take pictures. Remember
what a sight they were? I've since learned that they were on their way home
from a half year long blockade (with no liberty) of Rhodesia who had declared
themselves independent.

Anyway, their film ain't too good and didn't stand up to the years too well, but
here's how we looked to them as they pulled up to refuel us in August 1967. I'd
say we didn't look much like a U.S. Navy warship.   It had only been a week or
two since we left Subic Bay and we were already covered with rust again due to
the damage of the fire

These  are all photos taken of USS Forrestal (CVA-59)  when we were returning to the U.S. in August 1967 after our fire in the Tonkin Gulf on 29 July 1967. Once back in the states, we in RVAH-11 got  replacement aircraft, tools, etc. and returned to Vietnam aboard USS  Kitty

What Can Happen on an Aircraft Carrier?
Situation Critical: The U.S.S. Forrestal (1997)

Description
Situation Critical is the true story of the disaster that occurred aboard the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal, off the coast of North Vietnam. Witness the events as they unfold in real time, as the actual footage from TV cameras aboard the ship and voice recordings from the ship's PA system are used
.

Kenneth Smith (Springdale, Arkansas United States)
This movie is a must see for anyone that has the slightest interest in Aircraft carriers or in the Navy in General. I first saw the film in bootcamp as well in 1982. After bootcamp I was assigned to the USS John F. Kennedy for a tour of duty. The first film they showed us was this same film. It is very graphic and very disturbing to watch...but very captivating at the same time!! And I am sure the sailors who were there that day appreciate the fact that their day in "Hell" is now used as a training device to prevent the same thing from happening again. As anyone who has served on an aircraft carrier can tell you...they fly sometimes hundreds of sorties a day...and the fact that this accident hasn't been repeated goes to show you the value of this training film. Please buy this video and you wont be disappointed...this isn't Hollywood...this is life in a War Zone!!
