Here is one of the Union Pacific's flagship trains, The Portland
Rose, being pulled by three E9s with a full consist. She is headed eastbound,
going up the south bank of the Columbia River Gorge, around 1956. Lead
locomotive #951 is still owned and in use by the Union Pacific Railroad

1948, became the first of the Bipolars to be painted in the distinctive
Hiawatha color scheme. By 1960, the rugged and reliable Bipolar could not
compete with the more technologically advanced locomotives. One by
