The B-17 Flying Fortress is a key player in the book. The four-engined propeller aircraft was smaller than a modern Boeing 737-800 and had a combat radius of about 800 miles while carrying 6,000 pounds’ worth of ordnance and a nine-member crew. Robert Dorr also touches on the B-17’s less-heralded rival, the B-24 Liberator. The squat-looking aircraft, nicknamed “the box, was faster and heavier than the B-17 and could carry more ordnance, but not fly as high.

Pitts Aircraft Construction Exhibit
"MISSION TO BERLIN" is dedicated to pilot Marvin D. Lord, co-pilot Robert
Des Lauriers, togglier Ray Fredette and tail gunner Frank Chrastka. You'll
encounter air aces like Brooks Liles and Grant Turley and bomber pilots like
John Pesch and Harris Rogner. The book will be of interest to historians, the
warbird community and veterans' and reunion groups. A member of the 376th
Bombardment Group read the book in its pre-publication galley and said, "I
learned something new from this." He felt the book described what life was like
for these men. A bomber crewmember who served in a different theater called this
"a universal bomber crew story." Unable to become a pilot because of a hearing impairment, Bob Dorr studied the Korean language and served two tours with the U.S. Air Force in South Korea, where he monitored North Korean radio transmissions. He later spent 28 years as a Foreign Service officer, with postings to Korea, Madagascar, Japan, Liberia, England and Sweden. More from the author 3/29/2012 The book is a great gift
for an aviation person or a military history buff. |

This is their seldom-told story. 96 pages, 100 B&W photographs, 30 color profiles and more. 7¼"x 9¾", softcover. #0006070 Price: $22.95 |

Hell Hawks! The Untold Story of the American Fliers Who Savaged Hitler's Wehrmacht. Dorr & Jones. This book presents the World War II history of the 365th Fighter Group "Hell Hawks" - who flew the rugged, heavily armed P-47 Thunderbolt in close support of Eisenhower's ground forces advancing across France and into Germany - and shows you how much they had in common with the GIs they supported. 320 pages, B&W photographs, 6"x 9", hardcover. #0019195 Price: $24.95 |
Korean War Aces Aircraft of the Aces Vol. 4 Dorr, Lake & Thompson. The conflict in Korea saw F-86 Sabres of the USAF take on MiG-15s of North Korea and China. Sound training and skillful leadership soon enabled Sabre pilots to dominate the dogfights. B-24 Liberator Units of the Pacific War Combat Aircraft Vol. 11 Dorr. No one ever claimed that the B-24 was more elegant than the B-17 or that it performed as well at high altitude, but in rugged climes where long-distance performance mattered - in short, in the Pacific - the B-24 became the right aircraft at the right time. This detailed history covers the planes and the units who flew them. 96 pages, 90 B&W photographs and color profiles, 7¼"x 9¾", softcover. #0002229 Price: $22.95 |

This first, fully illustrated oral history of the "Flying Leathernecks" finally gives the Marine Air Wing the recognition they deserve.
