An aerial shot of three British Royal Navy ships while refueling, one of them is a British Aircraft Carrier.Referring to the tanker, RFA Tidesurge (A98) ...but here's what she looked like in bygone years when refueling a Royal Navy carrier (right) and tin can (left) as they steamed somewhere. We in the U.S. Navy referred to it as an UNREP (Underway Replenishment) and the British Navy called it a RAS (Replenishment at Sea). Oh, well. Brad Notice that this tanker, in the middle, is refueling two ships at one time. This saved a lot of time and was done even in rough seas. At sea refueling is a difficult job and was perfected by the US Navy years ago. I'm not sure how these ship pilots kept the lines at an exact tension without computers. |
