There's one thing these flying Jug's needed, and that was maintenance. During WW2 the P-47 Thunderbolt was a great plane because it was fast, carried a lot of ordinance and was heavily armored making it very hard to shoot down. There was also a whole team of men at the home base that were mechanics who performed all kinds of maintenance. These planes needed radio work, engine work, bullet holes patched, inspections, bombs and ammo loaded, just about anything you can think of and it was all maintenance.
