Picture of Hundreds of Seagulls in Valdez Alaska

C. Jeff Dyrek, Webmaster at the Kenai Peninsula Alaska. Oct 2006
In this picture you can see many, many seagulls near Port Valdez Alaska.  The picture was taken on a turnoff to the port itself.  There is a lot of security on this road as you cut off of Alaskan Highway 4 to the port and Fort Liscum Alaska.

I drove to Valdez Alaska and to Port Valdez and saw hundreds of seagulls gathering in their fishing area.  There were many creeks and marshes that the road had to cross and these marshes were filled with salmon and tons of seagulls.

When I entered the city of Valdez, I didn't know anything and anywhere to go.  It almost seemed like a dead end.  It was about time to eat lunch so I stopped in a restaurant and had a nice juicy fish dinner, it was just great.  I asked the waitress where to go to take some good pictures so she gave me a paper placemat with a map on it and started pointing out the places to go.  First she headed me into the mountains just north of Valdez, but I had a rental car and the road got rougher and rougher until I had to turn back.

So I went to the second place that she described which was actually the Port of Valdez on the south side Resurrection Bay.   I expected to see tankers lined up since this was the end of the Trans Alaskan Pipeline, but I didn't see a single tanker.  The weather started getting better and it stopped raining.  The streams were filled with Salmon and other fish.  There was a variety of birds everywhere eating there hearts out before they flew south for the winter.  I was very glad that the waitress sat down with me and talked for a while, it gave me a lot of insight on the trip and what to see in Valdez Alaska.
